<image:caption>Since 2019, the foundation has awarded over $100,000 in grants to deserving individuals and select organizations. In 2019, three were from the Marshall community on Chicago’s West Side, another from historic rival Evanston who participated in the FAAM (Fellowship of African American Men) youth basketball program, and one was from New Trier that works to build bridges with other communities and individuals in the Chicagoland area. Each year, the majority of grants go to the Marshall community on Chicago’s West Side. Graduating seniors from New Trier and historic rival Evanston represent the other individual selectees.</image:caption>

      <image:title>GameChanger Grants - BackgrounD</image:title>
<image:caption>The GameChangers ‘65-‘66 Foundation sprouted from two basketball games that were played over 50 years ago. After a documentary film brought the teams back together to reminisce, these same players started the foundation as a way to give back to the game and their communities. GameChanger Grants connect the North Shore with the West Side in the present day, benefitting current students and community influencers as they pursue their dreams. Each year for the next three years, the foundation will award $20,000 in grants to deserving individuals. In 2019, three will be from the Marshall community on Chicago’s West Side, another from historic rival Evanston who participated in the FAAM (Fellowship of African American Men) youth basketball program, and one from New Trier that works to build bridges with other communities and individuals in the area.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Foundation - Foundation tip-Off</image:title>
<image:caption>On March 5, 2018 the GameChangers Foundation became official and hosted a premiere screening of the GameChangers documentary film at the Wilmette Theatre. The fundraiser sold out in a few days, enabling a complimentary screening two weeks later at the Breakthrough FamilyPlex in East Garfield Park. That follow-up event in the city attracted players from both Marshall and New Trier teams, several sports broadcasters including Chet Coppock, Jordan Cornette and Kenny McReynolds, as well as a number of basketball legends from Chicago’s West Side such as Mickey Johnson (Chicago Bulls), Emmette Bryant (Boston Celtics), Gene Ford and Danny Crawford (veteran official who refereed 23 straight NBA finals) among others. The Marshall High School Alumni Association was also well represented.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The current generation of New Trier basketball players attended the Breakthrough screening as did other players and coaches from throughout the Chicagoland area. Three months later, the Marshall and New Trier teams high school basketball teams (see picture at top of this page) played in a fundraiser that featured a competitive basketball game doubleheader followed by a communal BBQ for the players. Funds raised outfitted the Marshall team with some new basketballs, Gatorade for the upcoming season and travel money to help the program fund participation in a tournament downstate.</image:caption>

<image:title>Foundation - SCREENINGS AT MARSHALL ON MARTIN LUTHER KING WEEKEND</image:title>
<image:caption>The picture alongside followed the 2019 screening at Marshall High School on Martin Luther King Day. Hosted in conjunction with the 20th Annual MLK Dream Classic, the Marshall Alumni Association and the GameChangers Foundation, the screening was introduced by IHSA Hall of Fame Coach Dorothy Gaters (collected her 10th State Championship in 2019) who emphasized the significance of showing the film on that special day. In attendance were both boys and girls high school teams that were playing in the three day holiday tournament, a collection of alumni from both Marshall and New Trier, as well as community members from Chicago’s West Side. The vibrant hour-long discussion after the film turned this into an annual event at the school, with GameChangers screening on Martin Luther King weekend again in 2020.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Story - BACKGROUND</image:title>
<image:caption>A historical documentary, GameChangers sits at the intersection of sports, race and culture, tipping off with rare, 8mm footage taken from two high school basketball games played in Chicago in the mid-Sixties. These tense, playoff matchups featured some predictable storylines, city versus suburbs, black versus white, and both games were played against the backdrop of a very turbulent time. Plenty of pre-game and post-game drama surrounded this particular rivalry, with shattered backboards, some really good basketball, and incendiary headlines ... all taking center stage. Fifty years to the day after the only playoff game in IHSA history to end before the final horn sounded, these rivals came back together for an unexpected reunion, and subsequent interviews with the attendees combine to shed new light on old memories. Much has transpired in the years since 1966, while some matters seem starkly the same.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Story - THE BRAWL</image:title>
<image:caption>Both games sold out McGaw Hall, the Northwestern University arena, as the City versus Suburban League match-up was highly anticipated every year. Over 8,500 fans attended and even 50 years later, the associated memories remain vivid today. Though we won’t give away the ending, part of the drama included fights that broke out at the end of the ‘66 game between the respective fan bases. The chaos in the stands that evening and dramatic headlines in the newspaper the next day reflected the turbulence in communities all across the country during that time. To defuse the annual City vs Suburban League clash, Northwestern never hosted an IHSA SuperSectional again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Story - The Teams</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1965 and 1966, Marshall and New Trier met in the Evanston SuperSectional in back to back years for the right to go downstate to play for the state championship. Marshall, the powerhouse from the Chicago Public League and perennial champ, was led by All American Richard Bradshaw. “Brad” went on to play at Kansas. New Trier, trying to advance downstate for the first time, featured 6'11" Larry Rosenzweig, also an All State selection. Larry went on to play at Stanford.</image:caption>
